The Warriors come to School

This week the Warriors were put to work at several Otara schools who will next year start the Garden to Table programme as part of the Glenn Family Foundation project. They dug gardens, built raised beds and filled them with Living Earth soil. The kids were so excited to have their league heroes at school. Here they are at one of our current schools in Otara, East Tamaki School, where the kids made them special Christmas cookies.

CANON Cameras for Garden to Table at Wynyard

Recently Canon New Zealand announced that the Garden to Table trust was one of three winners in the annual Canon Environmental Grants Programme that saw our Wynyard Project receive $5000 in Canon products.

Last week, Garden to Table Chairperson, Catherine Bell was presented with a comprehensive collection of camera equipment by Canon NZ's Managing Director Yusuke Mizoguchi. The presentation took place at Freeman's Bay School, one of several schools who will be involved at Wynyard Quarter.

Cake for Camilla

On Monday East Tamaki School was proud to host a visit from HRH The Duchess of Cornwall specifically to see the Garden to Table Programme in action. Unfortunately the inclement weather kept her from touring the garden, which was looking so spectacular for the day, but HRH spent some time in the kitchen, cooking with the children and then sharing what the kids had cooked at the beautifully set tables. She particularly enoyed the carrot cake and ate a whole slice. Jiuan Kok, the GTT kitchen specialist presented HRH with a set of the recipes to take home as a momento.

EAST TAMAKI SCHOOL CARROT CAKE RECIPE

Sourced and adapted from Gretta Anna Recipes by Gretta Anna Teplitzky, Australia

Ingredients

1 cup grated carrots
\n227g can of crushed pineapple
\n1 cup plain flour
\n1 teaspoon baking powder
\n¾ teaspoon baking soda
\n½ teaspoon salt
\n½ teaspoon cinnamon
\n¾ cup sugar
\n2 eggs
\n5 tablespoon oil
\n¼ cup chopped walnuts

Cream cheese icing
\n3 tablespoons butter
\n3 tablespoons cream cheese
\n½ teaspoon vanilla
\n250g icing sugar

Method

Preheat the oven at 175°C.
Drain the juice from the can of crushed pineapple.
In a large bowl sieve the plain flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon together. Mix in the sugar.
Add the eggs and oil.
Mix very well.
Stir in the grated carrots, crushed pineapple and walnuts.
Pour the mixture into a greased cake tin.
Bake in a moderate oven 175°C for 35 to 40 minutes.
Remove the cake from the cake tin and cool on a cake rack.

Cream cheese icing

Place all the ingredients into a medium size bowl and beat very well with a spatula. If too thick, add a small amount of milk to give a smooth consistency.
Smooth a layer of topping over the cake and decorate (the school used lovely blue borage flowers)
