Following the evaluation journey of Henderson North School and St John the Evangelist Catholic School, as they begin their Garden to Table programmes.
Term 3 - Let it rain!
Tuesday, October 29, 2019 | Linda Taylor
Our research schools have been very busy in the garden, despite the wet weather! They have sent us through these updates to let us know what they've
been working on during term 3, as well as the excitement of filming our new television commercial, produced and aired at no charge to Garden to Table
by the MediaWorks foundation. We can't wait to hear about their term 4 journey!
Give the tamariki from Room 7 at Henderson North School a watering can, a wheelbarrow, a grater or a chopping knife and they will grow food and cook it! We began our Garden to Table journey halfway through Term 1 and started harvesting and cooking our produce in the first week of Term 2 (top tip: radishes
are one of the quickest crops you can grow!). Along with pink, red and white 'Easter Egg' radishes, the kids have planted pak choi, mesclun, cabbages,
'Purple Dragon' carrots (purple on the outside and orange on the inside), crimson-flowering 'Hughey' broad beans, sugar snap peas, leeks, celery and
spring onions. So far we've eaten green salads, rhubarb crumble, pasta, stir-fries and green fritters - yum!
We've also planted some Mediterranean herb gardens under our verandas, daffodil bulbs for spring and are planting a herbal ley of beneficial plants
beneath the trees in our school orchard. We have had excellent support from Bunnings and Awapuni Nurseries and we're getting a new kitchen thanks to
The Trusts Million Dollar Mission and Moda Kitchens. We couldn't do it without the enthusiasm and expertise of our fantastic volunteers from Waitakere
Gardens retirement village. Not only do they help in the garden and kitchen, but because of the relationship the village has developed with our school
due to Garden to Table, residents are now coming in to help out with reading. Not only our kids leaning to grow and cook food but we're also strengthening
community ties - ka mau te wehi!
We were excited to see our new TV commercial launch on TV3 and other MediaWorks channels on Sunday 12 May. Our Ambassador Al Brown donates his time
to Garden to Table and, as a MediaWorks National Partner, MediaWorks produce and air our commercial for us without cost, so we are both fortunate and
grateful.
Welcome to St John the Evangelist Catholic School!
St John is a decile 1 school in Otara, Auckland, with a student community that is 95% Pasifika. They also started their Garden to Table journey late
in term 1 by weeding the raised garden beds ready for planting.
A big welcome to Garden to Table, Henderson North School!
Henderson North is a decile 3 school situated in West Auckland and has a diverse, multicultural student community. Approximately 30% of students
identify as Māori, 30% as Pasifika, and 20% of Asian heritage.

It certainly rained a lot last term, but that didn't stop our keen-bean Garden to Table class at Henderson North School.\n We grew microgreens in coffee cups, made scarecrows, celebrated Cook Island Language Week and Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, sprouted kūmara in water, ran\n a spud-growing competition and made soup, muffins, fried bread and salads galore. And thanks to the generous support of local businesses and community\n groups (Westside represent!), we now have four new raised garden beds and a brand spanking new kitchen. Here are the students harvesting their first\n crop of potatoes today. \"It's like digging for buried treasure!\" one of the boys said. Rachel, Henderson North School.

And at St John the Evangelist School, term 3 has been a very busy term! Despite many rainy\n Fridays we were able to get many things accomplished in the garden. We put down some paver stones to help beautify our garden, but more importantly\n to make our work easier on those wet, mucky days. It also gave us a chance to apply our knowledge about area and perimeter. We harvested heaps of silverbeet,\n cauliflower, broccoli, parsley, beets and an abundance of lettuce. Our beans have started to grow and we are excited to cook them up in Term 4.\n
\n
The highlight of our Term 3 harvest was the opportunity it provided to make the most delicious, yummy quiche - that was chock FULL of vegetables! We also\n were graciously welcomed by Henderson North School where we filmed the second set of promotions for TV3. We were very grateful for the manaakitanga\n extended to us by Henderson North School. We had a wonderful day where we planted micro greens and got to spend some more time with Al Brown. We are\n looking very forward to Term 4 - warm weather, plentiful harvest and a host of new dishes to try out! Michele, St John the Evangelist School

The students had a fantastic time working with the TV crew and Al to make the advert, although they did begin to realise that TV work involves a lot of\n waiting around. And also, TV directors like to film a scene more than once, which may involve replanting all the weeds that you have just weeded\n from the garden!
\n
We will be filming a further TV commercial later in the year as we revisit the schools to see their Garden to Table programmes in action, but we'll be\n posting monthly updates here so you can track the schools' progress throughout the year.
\n
You can watch our TV commercial below. Enjoy!\n

Like Henderson North, the arrival of the TV cameras created much excitement, with some of the students recognising Garden to Table Ambassador Al Brown\n from their knife skills videos, viewed the day before! However, they soon realised that filming for TV can be a pretty boring business, with\n lots of waiting around.
\n
The TV show The Project was also at the school filming, so we're looking forward to seeing more about St John on TV soon.
A big welcome to Garden to Table, Henderson North School! \n

\n
Students from years 3 and 4 began their Garden to Table sessions towards the end of term 1, with a huge part of the excitement being the visit from the\n MediaWorks TV cameras and Al Brown, to film Garden to Table's new television commercial. Less exciting was completing the long food literacy\n questionnaires!
\n
Changes in food literacy over the year is being examined in partnership with Professor Sheila Skeaff,\n from the University of Otago's Department of Human Nutrition. We're excited to be able to track the impact of Garden to Table on a range of food\n literacy indicators, and are really looking forward to tracking students as they learn how to grow, harvest, prepare and share good food.
